Valve rewards childish boycotters.

L4D2 Boycotters
As a keen Steam user and Left 4 Dead player, I have to say the latest actions undertaken by Valve have really ticked me off.

Most of you will be aware of the ridiculous uproar from certain members of the Steam community when Valve released news that they were working on Left 4 Dead 2.

Accusations of abandoning the original game and ripping people off flew around from the more childish members of the community (despite the fact most L4D players have clocked up 100’s of hours in a truly great game) and a boycott group was formed.

Valves response? Fly two of the group out to their offices, all expenses paid, to play Left 4 Dead 2.

Here we have a group of people who have spent their time slamming Valve on what is for most gamers a non-issue; and Valve rewards their moronic behaviour with what for many gamers would be the trip of a lifetime.

Nice one Valve. Most of your true fans appreciate the great game that Left 4 Dead is; have never been unhappy with the hundreds of hour's entertainment it’s provided because that is superb value for money. Most are happy we are getting a sequel to a great game sooner rather than (Episode 3) later.

So why does it now feel like you’ve just kicked all your loyal fans right where it hurts?

It is in fact you whos childish, and your envy is ugly when displayed like that. Instead of actually demonizing their fans because they have stupid opinions valve shows no fake pride and instead seeks communication and tries to educate the boycotters to solve the problem, which is a genius move and way more mature than silly teenager politics.

Really glad you have no part in running PR for a game company.

Thank you for your comment.

Silly teenager politics is all the L4D2 boycott has ever been.

And there are certainly more worthwhile people that could have been invited I'm sure (dedicated self funding people who run servers for Valve games being perhaps one); and the boycott community response has hardly been positive but then that's to be expected.

The L4D2 Boycott has always been childish in the extreme.

L4D was a revolution in co-op play, has provided hundreds of hours of play to those who embraced it and had been well supported with extra content and fixes.

Attacking Valve due to the release of a sequel which has always quite clearly offered a great deal over the original is the behaviour more befit to an adolescent.

Sounds like you are crying as much as the boycott now. AS first poster said, your envy is showing. Might want to cover it up a bit.

Thank you for your comment.

The boycott doesn't affect me directly so I have no need to feel aggrieved. I will be quite happily playing Left 4 Dead 2 regardless of the boycotters.

That said I'm fairly sure a good proportion of the boycotters will buy the game anyway.

Too many people on the internet just like to moan and seize on any opportunity to do so no matter how irrational.

As I have already said, the boycott has always been a rather childish action.

It's not envy I feel at the boycotters trip, its disappointment in Valve that they would effectively reward people so undeserving and immature.

There are many people (and I do not include myself among them) who are far more worthy of such a trip - in particular those people that invest a large amount of time and money running servers for Valve's games; map makers who add content to the various communities etc.

In some ways Valves actions at least show they care, but they did make the wrong decision and one which hasn’t ultimately made much difference except to alienate the two attendees.

Maybe you need to take a step back and understand WHY Valve had those guys out.

The concerns that they raised are valid: They were worried about Left 4 Dead not getting any more support or content when the sequel drops.

That might sound silly because it's so un-valve-like, but releasing a sequel in a year's time is un-valve-like too. Which is strange, because Valve apparently thought so too and invited some of (quoting Gabe's Gamespot interview) "The more articulate, well spoken" people who have concerns out to talk to the devs.

Brilliant stragegy on Valve's part. Too bad that a lot of people like you only see the whiney kids in that group and not the concerns that actually caused Valve to respond.

Valve had these guys out due to the number of boycotters plain and simple; and it was a good move on their part.

Valve are hardly going to verbally attack people who buy their products so Gabes comments are hardly a surprise.

The concerns raised were simply paranoia and over-reaction, right from the start.

Given the current general community response to Left 4 Dead 2 and the sheer volume of those actively playing the demo; it just shows how ridiculous the whole thing was from the start.
